, and distinguished senior fellow bob herbert. that you all for being here. and joining us now from washington is nbc news justice correspondent pete williams who has been tracking this supreme court case here. pete, put this in context for us. there was what they call a circuit split, different rulings in the lower courts. how does that affect our understanding fl the significance of the supreme court hearing this case? >> reporter: well, it was pretty much a foregone conclusion the court would take this case for two reasons. whenever the lower courts strike down part of a federal law, that makes it very important for the supreme court to hear the case. now the court today agreed to hear two cases, hobby lobby, in which the hobby lobby, the company, won the tenth circuit court of appeals said yes corporations do have and can exercise freedom of religion. and then another case, the third circuit said another company, which is in pennsylvania owned by a family of five menonites, the court ruled against them and said not only can the company assert religious religious freedom but they can't sue and cla

that this is a revolution that's been embraced far more by the businesses using the disruptive technology that you'll hear about, and not you, not individuals who are enjoying the fruits of lower costs. but these are not amazon or priceline, two companies i like very much. although priceline only valued by traditional metrics. you need to know that context here. because by and large the companies you'll be hearing from have eluded many of you, or at least their concepts have and their missions have. their missions seem to befuddled people. when most of us think of tech, what do we? oracle, microsoft, cisco, intel, ibm. we don't think of salesforce.com or workday or viva as being tech. we think of the former being cheap and latter as being ridiculously overvalued. and yes, on traditional metrics that's probably true. but sometimes we forget why we invest in tech in the first place. we do not do it for cheapness. we do not do it for dividends, and we certainly don't do it for buybacks. we do it for growth. unfortunately the companies we traditionally think of as tech are often really vestiges and trench pla

try every day to elevate political discourse and to focus on issues that matter to all of us. in the battle of ideas, america leads the world in whole hearted discussions and disagreements. and these arguments can be heard on a daily basis. but what i did on friday had absolutely nothing whatsoever to do with that great tradition. and i am deeply sorry. upon reflection, i so wish that i had been more thoughtful, more considerate, more compassionate. but i was not. and what i said is now a matter of public record. but if i could add something to the public record, it would be this. that i deeply regret what i said, and that i have learned a sober lesson in these last few days. that the politics of vitt re oil and destruction is a miserable place to be, and a miserable person to become. and i promise that i will take the opportunity to learn from this experience. my hope is that it will renew in me a spirit of humility and humanity, that looks for the good and that builds upon the great things that this country has to offer to all of us, regardless of our political persuasion.
